My wife woke me up early this morning telling me that I would have to babysit my 9 year old nephew today (I usually sleep in late, so this has already been a disturbance to my day)

Anyways, I have him over this morning and of course I'm not exactly sure what to do for entertainment... I was telling him stories of my 'good old days' when I was his age and how we used to chuck snow and ice balls at cars passing by.

This morning, I took him outside (as part of his rites of passage into boy-hood) and showed him how to throw the snow and ice at cars and not get caught... (from behind the bushes, I demonsrated a few times) He REFUSED to do it, and started crying. I told him how all real men have done this in their life and the tears continued...I mean, this kid was hysterical

I took him back inside, where he is now watching television. I'm really concerned about him...what kind of kid cries like this??

What kind of adult tempts a kid to do something wrong? Maybe you should seek help! Nowadays, children are taught to stand up to people who bully them. He was trying to cope with you by just saying NO...when that didn't work-- he used his last resort--crying.

Ignore the entire fiasco and pray he doesn't tell his mom what a jerk you were!

The crying was definitely as a result of feeling pressured into doing something he thought was wrong. In addition, he probably felt helpless because his parents weren't around. Add to that the feelings he may have had in 'displeasing' you and you've got a crying kid. Plus its cold outside with all that ice and snow. He may have been a little bit scared and uncomfortable too.

Don't forget that kids at that age don't have a reasonable/rational way of showing their feelings like adults do. All they CAN do is cry.

The kind who doesn't like throwing snowballs at cars.

You're concerned because he doesn't act like a Neanderthal such as yourself? Not all boys enjoy throwing snowballs at cars and hiding. I do agree more children should play outside and learn about the life it presents, but unfortunately, the advancement of television, video games, computers, etc keeps kids inside which limits their imagination, experiences and intellectual skills. Your nephew may enjoy staying inside watching TV all day, but don't blame him, blame his parent(s) for not making him go outside more and limiting his use of the electronic devices.

He's crying because you asked him to do something WRONG! He doesn't want to do something wrong, and he doesn't want to dissapoint you so you've put him in a tough spot. You should be proud that he is a good kid and doesn't want to do wrong.

It's simple. You were trying to make him do something that he was told was WRONG by his parents and he was torn between wanting to make you happy and keeping to the lessons taught by his parents.
