Why do so many Christians pretend that science and/or evolution are religions? This is a difficult question to answer because there are so many possibilities. Perhaps religion so controls their lives that they can't think outside of religious categories. Perhaps they can't imagine that anything which makes strong claims isn't religious.

I go this route on this one.

Christian means Christ Like and I need not explain that to you but bear in mind Jim, a lot of people come to Q&A for only a few minutes and they are gone.

There are a lot of things we Christians 100% agree with in the sience world and some thing are questionable. God get's his first and the rest is negotionable.

Science isn't a religion. It is based on provable, repeatable experimentation and direct observation.

Evolution and creation both require faith - and thus fall into the realm of religion. Religion requires blind adherence to unprovable events. A christian can no more prove Moses spoke to a burning bush, or Jesus healed a leper than the evolutionist can prove (scientifically) that dinosaurs evolved from amphibians. They both can only point to records that indicate these things may have happened.

However, most church leaders do not have a scientific background, and without making the distinction between science and evolution, they assume science leads to support evolutionary thought. This then lumps science in with evolution - and since evolution requires faith, then somehow so must science - and they both become religions.

Then, most christians are religious - blindly following a set of guidelines - and when the leader tells them something, they believe it.

But, before we say "aha", remember the same thing happens in the "secular" as well. But there the leader is the school teacher, university prof, etc... - and the students are the followers.

Confused - maybe these equations will help to explain what goes on in the mind of an unthinking religious christian

Evolution needs faith = religion
Science proves evolution
but - evolution is a religion
therefore - science = religion

As a final note, there are many non-religious christians out there who are quite entrenched in science. They are open enough to see that evolution and science are two different things.

I don't believe in religion. Why Christians are continuously generalized in what we believe, I don't understand. I don't believe that science or evolution had a rat's *** to do with us being here and therefore don't believe their a religion either. True Christians believe that they have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and that God created the earth and nothing else.

They're threatened by the perception that science disproves the literal interpretation of Genesis. That strict fundamentalist view of Genesis is so ludicrous that many sects of Christianity are embracing some form of evolution.

Maybe. I think it's plain transference. When ahh.. people who tend to find it difficult to face reality, glimpse a problem in themselves which they don't want to face, they often project it on to other people and attack them. They are venting their hate and rage at the problem, without having to consciously face it, and, as a bonus, getting a convenient sense of righteous hatred of their opposition.

You see it a lot with people with certain mental disorders (BPD etc). Or just your garden variety homophobe etc.

Here, you are talking about the minority of 'Christians' who have comic-book approach to their religion - they can't accept it on faith, but desperately want and con themselves that it is all simple and logical. ie. they hate that it is a religion.

Because they want to drag science in to the mud with them and pretend its just as fatuous and arbitrary as their superstitious beliefs.

It can and does go against what their fairytale book says. So if you go against it it must be a "new" demon loving religion.
