This is because when you look in a mirror what you see is a mirror image, and not a true reflection of how you actually look to others. A photograph is a true likeness.

Simplicity itself! Look in a mirror and you see the 'mirror image'. Things are reversed. For example; bring your left hand to your face and it appears to be your right hand in the image. You can never see yourself as you actually are, in reflections.
In a photo you see yourself as you actually are; or as others see you! Hope this helps. Try the simple experiment in front of a mirror.

Could be something to do with the fact that the image in the mirror is reversed. If you have a bent nose it will be bent the other way in a photograph to how you normally see it in the mirror.

In a mirror you have an objective image of yourself, so it makes you feel more critical of yourself. If a picture is well taken, on the other hand, the image may be more flattering.

Remember that your eyes are rooted into place in your eye sockets, in your skull. Therefore you can only see yourself either head-on, or from varying degree's of side angles-allowed by the span of your vision. This is the image that you are accustomed to seeing- yourself-mostly from the front, and always with your pupils staring directly forward (to you in the mirror-not others). However this is not the way that others view you at all, but only the way that you view yourself. Therefore, when you see yourself in the mirror-that is only one small aspect of what you actually look like. In photographs you can see yourself in a way that would never usually be possible (unless you can teleport outside yourself and look at yourself from "the outside"! lol) So in photo's you can see yourself from varying angles (that you are not used to), and you can see yourself interacting with others and looking in different directions (in mirror your pupils are straight on-unless you have multiple mirrors) Hope that helps! I think I've overcomplicated the issue! Ha ha! xxx

in the mirror you see a reflection of yourself so everythink eg a mole will be on the opposite side to what other people see - which is what you see in a photograph

the lighting or the flash from the camera can change the colors of you in the photo and appear to give you different features.
