I picked him up from his mother b/c she was producing bad milk and the owners weren't caring for him very well feeding him watered down food from a bottle, he was flea infested and they smoked in the house which was quite dirty, I am not a breeder just a good person who would like some good information. Any suggestions would be helpful. Right now he weighs 4 lbs.
3 oz. is that normal?

Feeding him Esbilac puppy formaula 1:2, every 3 hours. When you put a deposit down for a puppy you don't want to come back in 4-5 weeks knowing the condition that it was in only to find out that it is much worse than before. They had no Whelping box let the pups roam free with nothing to keep them warm besides each other there was no central heat in the house, but a large electric heater in the middle of the floor which they could get burned by the coils since they were so close to the ground. Don't judge a good person for trying to do the right thing for a poor innocent puppy with no chance at a good start in life.

Dane pups weigh from 2-3 # at birth, at 2 weeks they should weigh from 3-5#..go to the following site to see a Dane weight/height chart it will give you an idea on how your pup is progressing:
www.chromadane.com/ht&wt.htm
I would also suggest contacting a responsible Dane breeder near you and see about proper feeding of an orphan pup. Giant breeds need to be handled differently then smaller breeds.
Esbilac is ok but there are better..this is why I suggest you contact a breeder near you. Different things are available in different areas..what I have here may not be available where you are.
I also recommend using a playtex disposable nurser with natural shaped nipple for feeding your pup.
Go to the GDCA site and also contact JP Yosha at Chromadane. She is wonderful at getting back to people. Also contact Lyn Richards go to the following site to get contact info www.doglogic.com/feeding.htm

Good luck to you.

*****twrider, a Dane puppy doesn't weigh 15# until they are at least 6-7 weeks old and certainly not 30# until they are 2-3 months old!!!!! ********

the pup may have weighed 11 oz. - 1 lb or so at birth, 4 lbs + sounds pretty good for right now. how long have you had the pup -- he needs to be fed frequently since he is not being taken care of by his mother, i hope you have lots of time over these next few weeks until he is ready to be weaned.

definitely get him to the vet as soon as possible. a 2 week old being cared for by a human rather than its mother is probably in a precarious situation, you need to make sure you are doing everything you can for it.

also be aware that this pup is going to be pretty big, pretty quickly. it's been a while since i had a dog, but i remember my 10 month old dane pup weighing somewhere around 80 lbs.

this animal is going to need a good quality food as he begins to eat. invest in the best dog food you can buy. with the better foods, with less corn and such, the dog will eliminate less waste. (this means smaller piles of poop, something you will come to appreciate when you start having to pick it up.)

My first concern with your question, is who determined moms milk was bad? Vet checked? A dog does not care if a house is dirty, smoking inside is a persons choice, not ideal, but their choice... Are you qualified to properly bottle feed a puppy and do you know what to use to feed them with in bottle? Not trying to slam you, but asking the questions that should have been asked before you took the dog...

Go TO THE VET..........NOW! it's great you are helping this pup, but this sounds like he was in a bad situation. Tka ehim to get checked and the vet will tell you what to feed and how much. I hope your little one gets better soon.
