Because its very easy to misinterpret the bible.
The followers of Jesus thought that he was coming back right away. Then when it was beyond obvious that this was not happening, they switched to he was coming back within the generation they were living in.
People have been misinterpreting their words and ideas to mean he is coming very soon ever since. None of them seem to realize that following an idea that has been wrong consistently for 2,000 years is not any more likely to turn out differently now than it has in the past.
I'm sure You have heard the old saying about doing the same thing over and over in the exact same way and expecting change being the definition of insanity.

Basically because each of us knows he or she is going to die and that everything we know of the world exists only in the living tissues of our brains. We can say that the world exists only while we live. When we think of our inevitable death, we see the end of the world as we know it. Each death is the end of a world.
