I took hime to abilene animal hospital the bird was very calm in my hand as if it trusted me it knew i was getting it help it was a very cold day, abilene animal hospital could not do any thing for it the, told me i needed to call game warden, then a gentalmen came and looked at the bird said it was some kind of wook pecker then the bird perked up a little flew out of my hand then it flew back to me and landed back in to my hand with out any chase as if it trusted me. I took it out side put on bush it made a squack then flew a way, UM i think it was a for the bird to thank me for saving its life not sure, but ive looked at pitchures of wood pecker and i can. see any thing that matches him any one?

i saved it from being smashed on the road cause the bird would not move cars were driving over him ect but did not smash him. but he was as stated set back free animal shelter thought that the bird was so cold that he could not fly with the warmth of my hands and love for nature brought him back were he could go on his own and fly away but the thing is when the bird flew in the shelter for just a sec he came back to me and landed quietly back in to my hand and was very calm and quiet as if for some reason he knew i was not gona harm him. then i decided sence hes flying time to release him back in to the wild were he belongs i put him on the bush in frount of the shelter he made the one little squack then of he flew over the house and trees.

Northern Flicker.
Yours is the Yellow-shafted race.

The other race is the Red-shafted Flicker.
There is great variety in the head markings where the different races' breeding overlap.

"john j" calm yourself.

Sounds like a Northern Flicker. These are very interesting birds, different then a woodpecker in behavior. They will hang out in trees and eat ants, berries, and drink nectar. I know for such a big bird they eat ants!! They are also known to forage for insects and seeds on the ground. They are designed like a woodpecker but are separated by what they eat. I do Wildlife Rehab where I live. We get them in every once in a while (we are in the city, they aren't really city dwellers. There are more in the local mountains) They are just amazing birds, When they are in isolation we house them in large carriers. Let me tell you they sound like a jackhammer when they get to tapping hehehehe. You are lucky to have seen one up close and you did the right thing by calling Fish and Game. Most people don't bother.

That is a truly awesome story. It will make a great memory to hold on to. You are definitely blessed.
I'm not sure what kind of bird either, but it does sound like some kind of Woodpecker. Maybe if you google "pictures of Woodpeckers", you will find the one you're looking for. Good luck to you!

saved it from what? you would have to be dillusional to think that a wild bird feels "safe" being held by another species. if you were swimming in the ocean, and a shark grabbed you, swam around, and let you go would you have felt safe? STOP PROJECTING IRRATIONAL HUMAN TRAITS ONTO ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
gee i hope he made back to his heated hangar for the night!!! its strange we don't see more birds that need saving from the cold... i think you should crank up the heat at home and leave the doors and windows open-just incase a bird needs to warm up...
