When explaining fractions to my children I do it like this
I always imagine that the whole thing (£5.50 in your case) is split up or divided into the number on the bottom of the fraction ...1/3 so 3 in your case, so £5.50 divided into 3 portions, and the number on the top is how many 'portions' you want

1/3 of 5.50 is 1.8333333
2/3 of 5.50 is 3.6666666

One third of 5.50 = 1.83333333....
But you're talking about pounds and pence so you can't have all those decimal places. In this case round it down to
£1.83
Two thirds of 5.50 = 3.6666666666.... and again you cannot have a fraction of a penny, so round it up to £3.67
