LOL LOL LOL!!!! I Love it!!! A egg is exactly that, an egg. A package containing the components to create life..the egg MUST be fertilized in order for life to begin...the eggs you buy at the store not fertile because, there are no roosters in the egg farms to fertilize the hens eggs. Now, the eggs I collect have to be candled in order to determine whether they are fertilized or not. I have 20+ hens and 2 roosters. So without being too graphic.....an egg is a result of an ovulation that occurs about every 24 hours, when the egg passes it will be fertile or unfertile, depending on "if the fertilization process has been performed. Why do we eat them?....Protein. An egg whether it be fertile or not, is just a sack of protein until incubation starts after about ten days of incubation the egg has developed into a living creature. Eating veal is different as the animal is born , fed for a short time, then butchered.

It's the white, which I guess would be the sorta fluid part, like (amniotic fluid?) what's in a woman's womb when she's pregnant, and the yolk, which is the nutritious part for the baby bird to feed on as it is growing. But obviously, if there is no baby bird in them, they're pretty useless to the hen. The shell's just a protective layer.
Anyone's answers involving eating baby birds clearly have never owned chickens. Whether you have a cockrel or not, hens lay eggs pretty much every day. And they are unfertilised. Even if you left that egg for the hen to keep warm, it wouldn't ever turn into a chick.

Its the menstrual waste of a hen.
If the hen is fertilised by a cockerel the day before it lays then there is a chance the egg could be incubated to resutl in a chick, typically in 28 days.
Generally though, hen eggs are unfertilised and just and expell of the unfertilised repoductive protein.
People eat them because they are high in protein and form a good binding food for other products.
Its quite funny how "his Babe" is ranting about how daft you are for not knowing what an egg is....and then they proceed to not answer you....and they use Mcdonalds as an exmple of where you can find eggs...some people really do need to learn when to be quiet.
Pinkpup is also wrong. A hens egg is not a "baby chick that didn't get enough warmth"

Much of the reasons for eating eggs has more to do with chemistry than with taste.
The yolk is largely fat, but it also contains lecithin which is an emulsifier. Emulsifiers are molecules that bind fat with water, and these two things normally do not play well together.
The white is mostly protein and water, but can be whipped into foams to make foods lighter or to provide a sponge-like structure too foods.
Personally I don't really care for eggs by themselves, but I use them extensively in cooking.
