Depends on the age and what you plan to do with them. Toddlers and preschoolers can do about 1 to 1 1/2 before meltdown. From about 6 or 7 and up, plan a 2 hour party with lots of activity, crafts, games. The time will fly and they will have a blast!!

My daughters birthday parties have always been about 2 hours whether we had it at home or somewhere else. I think that is plenty of time to play, open presents, and have cake. I think any longer than that would just be too long.

long enough that they are going home BEFORE you are sipping strong booze...............
Seriously tho, about 2 hours is the norm, it really depends on if it is at your house, at a planned place [chuckie cheese etc] and the fact that you are going to have so many kids in your house and maybe the parents will stay and maybe they wont.............MAYBE they will also drop off their other kids...............dont laugh it happens ALL the time............and then make sure you have WORKING cell numbers for all the kids parents.....had one mother drop off their kid and came back 8 hours later after a LOVELY time at the spa and shopping...I was ready to smack her stupid by the time she came back for her snotty kid.
stick to a working amount of kids and the more kids you have the less time the party runs............

Two hours: enough time to greet everyone, play a game or two, eat some cake, and open the presents. Keep it short for your own sake!

90 minutes should be a good length of time- long enough for the kids to play games, then have cake, and then open gifts- but not too long that they get over-excited and bounce off the ceiling.

Three to four hours, children at that age as you know tire easily and get cranky. Just enough time for some back a few games, maybe a snack and presents is about all they can handle.
