how can dry matter be used in the discussion of plant function in general and in particular for plant exposed to environmental stresses?

Usually a higher mass of plant = healthier plant (this is SUPER general), so if you weigh a plant, then put the plant in an oven, dry it out, then weigh it again, you can have a general idea of mass of dry weight. If you had a plant that was water stressed (meaning it didn't have enough water), the dry weight mass ratio would be higher than a plant in plenty of water. I'm not exactly sure what determination of dry matter is. Really, in my opinion, determination of dry matter is a terribly way to measure a plant's reaction to environmental stresses.

all u have to do is to plasmolyse the cell using a suitable hypertonic soln..when all the water comes out of th cell by exosmosis,take the mass of the cell n eureka u get d dry mass.
