It's because of people's perception of what is the "normal" way to act.

The medicine will make them very flat and emotionless however this is also one of the symptoms of schizophrenia, in some forms they loose emotion they become flat and in other forms it often makes the person seem to wear strange clothing, sometimes theatrical like makeup (which is not very common anymore it seemed to be seen a lot back in the 80s in psychiatric units) Schizophrenia is a pretty strange illness to begin with and it does make you do very strange things, I seem to be constantly changing hats due to my paranoid thoughts (I won't mention why as I often find mentioning such things degrading) all in all it depends on the person but mostly medication will make them very very flat and emotionless as anti-psychotics are labeled major tranquilizers.
I do find though I have met many that look like normal people, others can never tell they even have anything wrong with them when medicated but I can pick out one a mile away no matter how normal looking they seem.

The thing is that schizophrenia causes damage to many parts of the brain. The folks that have it truly have can have a hard time relating to others. The psychosis that goes along with it is caused by too much dopamine in parts of the brain. If it is in the seeing part of the brain (processes things we see) they will see things that aren't there in the same way they see things that are. They aren't imagining things....they truly see them. Same for hearing things. They may have odd fears such as touching things giving them germs or that people are trying to poison them. Lack of motivation is a major symptom. The dopamine is why they take a dopamine agonist. I suppose it would be hard to appear normal if you heard people having conversations all day and you couldn't tell which were real and which weren't. They found that in a quiet room the hearing part of the brain can be as active for a person with that illness as it would be for someone listening to music for a normal person. The dopamine is what tells our brain what is going on when our nerves are stimulated, so truly it does make sense when you think about the symptoms. The problem is that folks that are "mental" have a physical illness that happens to attack their brain. Same as someone with seizure disorder or a brain tumor. Because folks for years thought it was ability to cope or something there is a terrible stigma about it. Even depression affects a lot of brain function in that it slows it all down. They have found the reason that it takes an antidepressent med to work so long is that it isn't balancing chemicals as they always thought, it is actually growing new nerve receptors to work with those brain chemicals. All very interesting stuff and very, very sad. It could happen to anyone with the right genes and the right stressors to turn them on.

it is usually the medication. medications have some side effects. it also could be that they are still responding to some internal stimuli, such as voices, which , even on medication do not always disappear. sometimes it is lack of medication. if they are not taking them properly. people with ms are not the same. ms causes the body functions to shut down. a kind word, or a smile can go a long ways in your job. if you get to know your clients a little, you will find out that they are not that different than you.

The "strange ness" that you see is probably caused by the drugs they are taking, and not the illness!!!! P.S. MS is a very different illness, look it up on the Internet!!!!

Very often their medication and their side effects, though the more recent drugs don't seem to produce the same " weirdness"

You mean I look weird? It's just because of the medicine! Depends on what kind of drugs they take.

I don't think I look different and strange. Your question seems very closed as if you are implying all of us look strange and we don't.
