It's going to require that you change your lifestyle...It means working out regularly, eating properly, and it's no fun.
Half of the problem is that the military uses an outdated chart that should be changed. I was in the military ten years ago, and it's the same chart that was 20 years old when I served.
People are expected to have almost zero body fat, when it's not healthy or realistic. Not everyone is a frail skinny tri-athlete that can run, swim, and bike for 30 miles. Some people have different body shapes.
Me...I'm pretty stocky, and it didn't help matters that I used to be a body builder. I always had issues whenever they measured my body fat, which was twice a year. Sometimes they'd let it slide, sometimes they wouldn't.
If you want to look like a tri-athlete, I'd recommend aerobic exercises and avoid the free-weights. Good luck with getting in, and if you do make it, thanks for what you do in advance.

I did when I joined the Marines. I'm not sure if this is still available but you might be able to join a DEP (Delayed Entry Program). The recruiters can help you lose the weight by exercising with you (they have to do it anyways so you might as well join them if you can). It will help build your spirit and stamina and you might be able to learn more about the Air Force which will help you in the basic training. It would also count as time in service for you but you aren't 100% committed because you don't sign a contract. Eat healthier and exercise more. If you don't make some healthy lifestyle changes, you will have weight problems during your enlistment and it will be harder for you.

I'm not sure if Air Force lets you go by body fat percentage if you're over the weight but you should look into that. I would suggest getting a membership to your local YMCA and start hitting those machines. When you go grocery shopping only buy healthy food. If you only have healthy food in the house when you decide to munch while you're watching tv or whatever you will be munching on something good for you instead of something fattening. Give yourself a treat on the weekend if you have been good throughout the week.

My husband was over the wieght limit but he still joined. He was DEP and he dropped 40 pounds in a month a half on Slim-Fast and a strict exercise program. He has kept that wieght off for 3 years now through exercise and a healthy diet.

Believe me, you do not want to go to basic training when overweight. They will humiliate you hourly. I was 5'-8" and weighed 132 when entering so had no problem. However my son was 5'-11" and weighed 190. He almost didn't make it through Basic because of the constant degrading treatment he received. He did drop the weight and spent eight years in the AF.
My advise is to get in shape both physically and mentally prior to enlistment.
Good luck, you picked the correct arm of the service, however the AF does have a higher expectation.

Max weight for 5'7" is 179lbs, I am the same height but I did not have any problem. I could tell you that if you really want to join the USAF then try doing our PRT regeiment you will drop pounds.
1.5 miles in under 11 min. 45 sec.
45 pushups in 1 min.
50 pushups in 1 min.
10 pullups
Do this 3 to 5 times a week and you will not only drop weigh but you will also have the qualifying times for USAF PRT.

What is the results of your "tape" test? This is the test used to determine you body fat. In the Army at least, you can be "overweight" but still "make tape", meaning that your body fat is low, i.e., you have more muscle mass.
If your "tape" test shows that you have too much flab, then I recommend a type of Atkins diet and running. After 1200 (noon), don't eat any more carbohydrates. After 6pm, don't eat anything at all. Don't drink soda or alcohol. Include running or FAST walking and you will lose the weight.

Well, a lot of people at this point are weak-minded and get into another service because maybe the standards are different...don't be that guy that just gets rounded up by one of the other branches if that's not really what you want to do.

Is it fat or is it muscle, you can always have your body fat % checked. If its muscle then there will be no problem with getting a waiver.
I almost had the problem on the other end, I was a skinny bastard in highschool and was 2 lbs over my min.
