We just got a pup. He is AKC registerable and we want to get him registered, but we noticed that the color code on the papers from the breeder is wrong. Thye have him coded as chocolate, but he is yellow. Is this an issue for us to just change it before filing the papers??

Also, is there some requirement on the names that you have to use to register them? My wife thought there was something with using part of the parents names??

Get in contact with the AKC they may have to send a letter out to the breeder verifying the color so the breeder can sign that. Sometimes they do these things because they don't want anyone taking papers from one dog and putting them on another. Just use the phone number. 919.233.9767

As far as using the prefix kennel name, unless the breeder filled it in or has a contract saying you must use it you do not have to. Also, the box that says whether it was a registered kennel name is only for larger commercial registered kennels. AKC has had a rather high number requirement to register a name for years and not many have done that. There are very wonderful reputable breeders who do not have that box checked as their kennel name is not registered as such. Further names which are not unique but are kennel names are not registerable as kennel names. In Canada that is different and kennel names are registered.

Call the breeder or AKC about the color. The AKC has always been very helpful when I've called them.

As to the name, unless the breeder required it, there are no requirements on the name of the dog. If you don't have permission to use the kennel name, get it from the breeder if you want to use that in the dog's name. The AKC states that the name must be limited to 28 characters (including spaces or punctuation) but you can actually go over that and still be approved. I have one dog currently that has 29 characters.

Most folks register their pup using the name of the kennel and the breeder's theme for the litter. For example: if you got the dog from the "Snoopy" kennel and the litter theme was anything beginning with the letter "B", you could name your dog, "Snoopy's Baseball Player". You can't use anything considered to be offensive and I believe you're limited to 28 characters in the name (apostrophes, commas etc count). You can't use the name "Champ" or "Champion" or anything else similar to the title of champion. The call name you choose for your dog would be whatever you call him. It doesn't have to do with the registered name and it doesn't go on the papers.
As far as the error: You might have got the wrong papers from the breeder if there was a chocolate pup in the litter. Double check with the breeder. Otherwise, call the AKC. They'll tell you how to make the correction on the application before you send it in.

If you go to the AKC site - AKC.com and go to their Registration link. There's an FAQ section. While I didn't see that particular FAQ, there is one about incorrect names. You can also email them your question. They will help you. I'm sure this happens more often than not.

Also, I suggest contacting your breeder. I'm sure he or she has done this before and will be able to help you as well.

You don't have to use parent's names but sometimes the breeder would like to you use the kennel name. They may have a tradition. If you look at the lineage of your dog, you can see the pattern. I think it's correct to follow the tradition within your kennel (breeder). Once again, ask your breeder for help.

We had to pick our pup's name before we brought her home. Not that had nothing to do with her call name.... just her registered name.

Good luck.

The breeder is the only one that can make changes. You will need to contact the breeder.

There are no requirements as to what you name your puppy. It is up to you unless the breeder specified that their kennel name beused and if that was the case she would have already put that on the application. Go to the AKC site and it will give you the "rules" for naming your pup. www.akc.org

If the breeder has not stipulated that you must use their kennel name in the dog's name, you can name him whatever you want to.

I would contact the AKC about the color code. If you alter them without getting approval, they might be rejected.
