We must put the question in perspective. America is a superpower, but a benign superpower. Look at how USA has help Germany and Japan recover after WWII. It was not a case of winners take all, and the victors lords over the vanquished.
Today, USA play the role of the world" policeman" trying to maintain peace world getting into trouble spots eg Bosnia and Kuwait (1990) even though it is not their war(yes, they may have some vested interests). Inevitably they made enemies all over the world and are subject to attacks on their own soil, and that is why 9/11 happened.
We must be able to stand up to terrorists and not be cowered by them and say, "look , make friends with them and they will not attack us". That is wishful thinking....
Having said that, USA must make friends with more allied countries and try understand their practices, religious beliefs etc. to counter terrorism. Not all Muslims are bad nor are they crazy and non-muslim Americans must try to know and understand them.
By the way, I am not from USA nor a muslim.

These muslim crazies have hated us since the dawn of time. They will continue to hate us no matter what we do, whether we leave them to their own demise, or we do it for them. These muslims hate us because we are not muslim, its a simple fact. I'll beat you to the punch, not all muslims are like this, but the ones who are considered terrorists. Sure, its a fact that we do create more anger at us, but it will always be there, so by doing what we are doing is creating a few more potential terrorists, i say, so be it. I've been to Iraq, big deal, but have some common sense. Many of you have to grow up and realize that there never will be world peace, its a sad fact, but with these crazy terrorists running around killing anyone who isnt in their religious mindset, I feel safer with how the world is handling it.

This is SUCH a B***S*** argument. The United States doesn't create more terrorists. Terrorists create more terrorists. I suppose that all the terrorists who amassed in the years prior to the war in Iraq were created by the US somehow as well? Whether or not we fight them, terrorists are always going to be recruiting more terrorists.
Just because something is difficult does not mean it isn't worth doing. The War on Terror is going to be decades long probably, and winning the proverbial "hearts and minds" of the people of the Middle East is going to be near impossible, but so was defeating the Nazis and the Japanese at the same time. It's going to be really tough, but it's got to be done.

We create terrorists and THEN we kill them.
Is that ethical? Wouldn't it be better to give people the opportunity to live as productive members of society instead of criminals? We spend a lot of time trying to make sure that our children are not mal-adjusted so they don't end up down the wrong path but we don't seem to have any compunctions about providing the impetus for people to become terrorists just so we can kill them for our supposedly noble cause.

So then what is your plan? Give the terrorists some candy and flowers and let them kill Westerners?

Yes, it seems to be similar the moster fought by Hercules that would grow two heads for every head that was cut off.
However, you must realize that by fighting the war in their back yard, we are severely disrupting their training and financing activities.
Terrorism is inevitable. We were attacked repeatedly prior to Iraq. Prior to 9/11 even.
But I for one would gladly accept 100 untrained underfunded terrorists in exchange for every well trained well funded terrorist eliminated.

Yes, the terrorists that we kill become martyrs and embolden more to fight. Instead of winning the hearts and minds of the people we get them killed through collateral damage
