India is poor, because it has inherited from colonialisation, the wealth that was left to this country, when the occupiers left this country. At that time, peoples standard of living was worse than what it is today.
But the people of India are thankful to the British rulers, for having laid a railway transport system, a good network from east to west and north to south. Besides, a legacy of educational institutions which taught basic education upto high school standards and also arts and science colleges, though they were few and located only in cities. But this education and coupled with the new engineering and medical colleges and a no. of colleges for arts and science that came up almost every place of India after independence, has made what india is today. Though population has increased manifold, the available resources have been utilised through five year plans.
