The reason I ask is my four month old American Bulldog drinks gallons of water. I have had the breed of dog for over 6 years and never had a puppy drink like this? Could it be kidney problems?

Just an update on my question about my puppy and Beneful. I switch him to Iams smart puppy and already the water consumption has dropped......in just 24 hours. It very well could just be the breed and this type of food don't mix. Who knows?

I have actually had several people mention exactly what you said 'funny side effects' after starting beneful. Most of those owners were disturbed enought to change their food choices. One person did not and her dog later died. There is no confirmation that it was in any way related to the food but the owner felt it was the problem and she made a recommendation to others to avoid the food.
This is not related to the reports of aflotoxin poisonings that have affected some dog foods (like Diamond dog food last year).
At any rate, look at the ingredient list - not someting to feed a dog. Try better foods like solid gold, natural balance, nature's variety, verus, merrick, etc.

I have heard some roumors about this but I have seen no credible proof on it. My pup was raised on Beneful and continues to thrive on the adult formula.

However if I am to find truth in this I will promptly change my dogs food.

You should talk to your breeder. But, yes, dogs can react to the food they eat. Beneful is crap. It has terrible ingredients and dogs can suffer from diarrhea and vomiting while eating something that is basically filler with too much corn and crap.
Puppies should drink when they are thirsty, but excessive drinking can be a sign of other health concerns.
Talk to your veterinarian and then your breeder.

might not even be the dog food brand that you are using, dogs do drink a lot of water though, take your dog to the vet to be on the safe side anyways, think about this though, especially if you live in a warmer climate area, if you were wandering around with your tongue hanging out of your mouth because panting was just what you did your mouth would dry out a lot quicker and you'd probably drink a lot more water then wouldn't you?
