I've noticed in the last 5 years or so that so many people are suffering depression, anxiety and general unhappiness. Now there's a report that the UK has the most unhappy, unhealthy and unsafe children in the developed world. It's not like the UK is a country that suffers as much poverty, famine, war and stuff that makes life incredibly hard in other parts of the world, so what's going on?

i think its the new world order slowly coming into play...rules and regulations and laws slowly changing one by one. read up about the new world order and keep your eyes and ears open and see all the signs and alterations starting to happen..if you look carefully youll see evidence of this startin to happen. i maybe wrong or delusional but i dont think so because other people like yourself and news reports are starting to acknowledge these incredablly grim changes to...the people who are starting to realise and notice means for them that they have not been swallowed up by it all, and care, and start to form a rebellion with other like minded individuals you can stand strong against this movement...theres power in numbers..the more people who realise something very wrong is happening to our society, better youll be able to fight it. because your not just mindless robots who have buckled and are willing to go along with the scary change and conform!

A large-scale research project by Professor Lord Layard at London School of Economics highlights the adverse effects of economic inequality on happiness. Once the basic needs of life have been met it is not so much absolute wealth that determines happiness as wealth relative to others. And the UK is a very unequal country compared to others in the developed world.
Other broad brush answers are:-
1. Overcrowding. Britain is overall one of the most heavily populated countries in the world, and on top of that most people are squashed into a few cities. People need space for recreation and leisure, apart from the hassles of overcrowded transport.
2. Breakdown of social relationships. As the first industrialised society people have had to move around the country for work for several hundred years now, and the disruption cuased to family life is disastrous. Excessive working hours (which research evidence shows not to help, and sometimes to harm total output) also help destroy social wellbeing.

I'd say it's a combination of increasing acceptance (and even fashionability in some sectors of society!) of mental illnesses such as depression, and an increasing reliance on consumerism and greed as a source of happiness over family and community.
I'd use the analogy that buying stuff is like fast food for the soul, but lasting links with society is a gourmet dinner.

Think the stress could be caused by the massive prices we pay in the UK compaired to the rest of mainland Europe.
We pay well over the odds for everything, that makes me depressed and unhappy.

The breakdown of the traditional family is to blame.
The family is like a cell for a foundation of a strong society, when you damage a cell the illness spreads to the whole body.

We work our butt's off to pay our bills and pay taxes, the government squeezes every penny they can out of us and then wastes the money and don't deal with any of the problems properly.
If i think about it too long I start to feel depressed too.
