A hip roof has four sides instead of just a front and back. Try this - draw a stick person without a head, with its arms and legs extended like it's doing jumping jacks. Connect the hands/feet in a rectangle. This is what a hip roof looks like from the top.

It is a simple roof with two slanted sides and a triangular shape on each end, called gables.
