A bird without feathers cannot fly...those that do not fly have feathers to keep them warm...and also, if it weren't for feathers...what would the scholars have used to write back in the day when pens weren't invented.
Oh yeah, and many also use their feathers to attract the opposite sex during mating season.

Feathers keep bird warm and are water proof. They also help birds glide in the air. (Also without feathers birds would look butt-ugly! ;)

Waterproofing, Flight, Mating (some birds molt into mating plumage to get a mate i.e. male House Finches are modeled and bland during fall and winter but they will molt and get a vibrant red head and chest during spring and summer. The redder the male the more females he will be able to choose from.)

so we can have the phrase: Like water off a ducks back
=)
Actually this is why (from Oregon's Bird Choices - Types of Feathers):
Feathers have evolved to serve a variety of functions --- flight, heat conservation, waterproofing, camouflage, and display.
(Display is for mating, and sometimes protection - to scare predators away instead of camouflaging themselves).
