The Comforter is the Holy Spirit.
Jesus promised that He (comforter) would come after His resurrection. In Acts chapter 2, the Holy Spirit was ushered into the body of believers on the day of Pentecost. This same comforter comes into you as a believer at the moment of salvation. You don't have to speak in tongues or anything like that.........the moment you believe....He dwells within you.
He is the one who guides us into all truth. He is the one who opens our spiritual eyes to see things for the way they really are. He is the one who empowers us to believe in the first place.
Praise God for the Comforter..........

Read John 14, 15, and 16. Then read Acts, to see where Jesus' words happened. Read especially John 14:26. The comforter is the Holy Spirit.

As many have already replied to you, the Holy Spirit is the "Comforter" although many cannot find it in their Bibles beecause it is only used in the KJV. Here are the references in King James:
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
John 14:26 But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
John 15:26 . But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, [even] the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

The comforter/counsellor or Holy Spirit was promised by Jesus when he ascended into heaven. Read the begining of Acts
In Acts 2, things really begin to get exciting. The promised One, the Comforter, comes to the believers at Pentecost. They were all waiting together in one place in Jerusalem as they had been commanded when "a sound like a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." As the remainder of the chapter describes, the believers were indeed able to be Christ's witnesses by the power of the Holy Spirit as promised in chapter 1. Peter spoke boldly to the many gathered in Jerusalem for the feast, explaining from Scripture about the Christ. A great many, about 3000, accepted his message and were baptized.

The title or name Comforter comes from the gospel of John chapters 14- 16. In these chapters, Jesus teaches his disciples that if He goes away (back to heaven) God the Father will send "the Comforter". He is refering to the coming of the Holy Spirit (John 14:26).
This was fulfilled in Acts chapter 2 when the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit as it came upon them "as a rushing mighty wind" etc.
god bless

Here are some verses where Jesus taught about the Holy Spirit and what He does in us:
John 14:16,17 And I will pray to the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Parakletos), that He may abide in you forever, even the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
John 16:7-11 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart I will send Him to you. And when He comes, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to the Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
John 16:13-15 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you of things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of mine and declare it to you.
In Acts 1:8 we are told that we will receive power when we are are baptized in the Holy Spirit. You need to be so baptized with evidence of speaking in tongues to really know you have received the Holy Spirit. Praying in tongues or otherwsie known as praying in the Spirit is very important because it is the Holy Spirit who can help you pray for all things so that all things will work together for the good of you (Rom 8:26-28). I pray that God will help you find the Spirit-filled Christians who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

I agree with answerer #2, however, the Holy Spirit, the comforter, is available to ALL,--- those who believe and those who don't. The Holy Spirit, contrary to Christian belief, does not pick and choose but is available to all beings.
Blessings

Lamentation 1:16 For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed. (This passages speak about Jesus he first comforter)
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (Jesus is speaking here of the holy ghost)
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (Jesus is speaking here again for the promised holy spirit)
The Holy Spirit (or holy Ghost)
The one who enables man to truly worship and obey God. The guide to the truth of the Father. The Spirit is the promised guide and reminder of all that Jesus taught while He was on Earth. By keeping in touch with the Holy Spirit we are able to worship God as He truly wants to be worshipped.
Scripture Support:
John 4:24 - God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
John 14:17 - Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and will be in you.
John 16: 13-15 - Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hat are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Only as one walks in the Spirit can he be empowered to accomplish the things God wants him to do.

The "comforter" is the Spirit of YAHOSHUA, which is promised to become the head or (Lord) of a believer, to guide us into all truth. Churchianity is a pagan (heathen) religion, bearing no real relationship to the true worship of Scripture.
