I assume you are using Windows .
Pressing Window key + M is the direct answer to you question but it does not been used efficiently. However, I use Window+D instead because it works almost the same way as minimizing the windows but you can do it with one hand.( Definitely, your right hand does not have to leave the mouse to press M or you don't have to spread the left fingers to press M either.)
In windows you can press Window key + D to see the desktop.
that's not the minimize as you want but I always use it in order to see what's going on and then click the task to open up the window that I want to see.

You don't say which operating environment you're using, so I'll give you answers for three popular ones:
