I did New York at Christmas a couple of years ago and it was the most magical Christmas I have ever had. I have been begging my husband for us to spend another Christmas there! I think the main things you will need to do are The Rockerfella Centre to see the tree and the skating rink. I have some stunning photo's on line at http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/1122312
The Christmas lights took my breath away and 5th Avenue was a treat. Central Park was fantastic, especially as it snowed on Boxing day! We also did the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, boy was it cold! I would highly recommend a visit to FAO Schwartz on Christmas Eve if you are there in time. I don't have kids but it's crazy mad inside and has a wonderful atmosphere.
Park Avenue was one of the prettiest Avenues with all the lights.
We actually went to NY for the second time in Jan this year and found a wonderful restaurant called Pampano's and had an amazing meal. This is one of the best places I have eaten around the world. Don't eat at any of the touristy places along 5th Avenue. On our first day there we were really tired and just went into TGI's - it was really expensive compared to other places.
My only advise is to walk everywhere and you won't miss anything! But my favourite things to do were, Empire State Building at night, less frantic and the views are stunning. Go up the Rockerfella tower during the day and you will get good views of Central Park. The Chrysler building at night is stunning as well. I loved Grand Central Station and my favourite building in New York is The Flat Iron Building. Have a great time!
