Is it still not very painful if the decay is growing from the inside of the tooth outwards???

I am also extremely needle phobic and once opted to have a filling done without the pain killer.

I found it to be a very unpleasant experience. It was not so much painful, as the vibrations from the drill in my tooth was extremely unnerving. And towards the end, as they got closer to the roots of the tooth it began to become painful.

My dentist said that different people react differently. Some deal okay with the vibrations, and some come unglued at it. He gave me the option of starting w/out the painkiller and if it had begun to hurt too much, I was to raise my hand and he would stop to administer it.

I was able to finish the filling by clenching all the muscles in my legs and gripping the chairs arms very tightly to keep from moving.

So you could probably start without, but if you found it too unnerving, have them stop and administer the pain killer.

But I will never choose to go without the pain killer again. 5 second needle vs. 5 to 10 minutes of insane vibrations in my head. I'll take the needle, thank you.

Hi, I'm a dentist. I've done several fillings today without "freezing" anyone and they were surprised that it could be done. The thing is your dentist has to explain everything to you so there are no surprises and, most importantly, be gentle. There are several tools to help dentists minimize the number of shots given and the discomfort felt such as dental lasers and better filling materials.
Remember it's your body and you have the right to have an input into your treatment and that includes comfort!

I've had fillings both with and without the injection. Although I always feel the pain regardless I will say it is slightly less with the injection. In fact I've 2 fillings today at 5pm.

My dentist is very good, she always tells me that if I want her to stop to raise my hand. To date I've never done it but its nice to see a considerate dentist.

I have all my fiillings done without injection, because i hate feeling numb afterwards.
It's fine for the most part, just sometimes they hit a tender spot.
Hope it goes well.
