has any one tried to use a camera to photograph a monitor?

The monitor refreshes the image about 60 times a second, so as long as you have a shutter speed which is slower than 1/60 there should be no problem. At higher shutter speeds, only part of the screen will be captured.

I recommend shooting at 1/30 sec. And using a tripod or other support.
