There are different reasons for this. First, they are afraid of rejection. Second, they are afraid of being laughed at or humiliated for having feelings. Our society expressly forbids men from having feelings. Only women have feelings. If a man has them, there is something wrong with him.
In your friends case, he is probably afraid of showing his feelings because he feels that he will be laughed at. He may like you, but is afraid to show it, especially when girls often humiliate the guys they don't like.
Damned if you do and damned if you don't!

They, think it's weak!
We are (naturally) less communicative!
We have to compete with other males who would use and see it as a weakness and you girls all love a winner!
We are less mature Initially!
We are scared to get hurt or smothered and fear commitments.
Age improves all of the above!
We can be very sweet but if it's not receipted we absolutely regret it and feel humiliated by what seems like feline coldness.

Its never been so easy to express our feelings even though we know the others from a long time and the main thing boys are shy about their feelings it that they are stubborn and they don't want to be insulted by the others.
Most of the Guys are like this and they know that they are not enough to express their feelings and even others take advantage of the boys who express their feelings and even they do make them laughing stock.

i'm not a guy but i think i can answer some of these qns. well for one,guys don't really understand how we girls feel and want them to be. and sometimes when they don't know how to act around the girl they like,they will try to humiliate you,provoke you or make you pissed because they want your attention but do not how to get it. well for one,you gotta be patient with them and tell them how you want it to be. some guys just can't take hints.

i am a man, i'm not afraid to cry, or bleed, or wear my feelings on my sleeve to be honest most women hate that, i am a gentlemen, and it seems most women want an abusive jerk of a boyfriend then somebody to make them feel like a queen..just life i guess, maybe i'll find a nice girl one day.

Feel scared. We don't want to be hurt ourselves. We don't want to be rejected and have our hearts broken. Guys are human as well. We don't like pain. We don't have the courage sometimes to share our feelings.

we boys are shy to express our feelings bcoz we are afraid of getting a big scolding from u(girls) or a footwear or something.
