Question about blood dontaion?

I donated blood today. Before the nurse took my blood, she injected me with a syringe to make my veins bulge or something like that...what is this material?

she injected normal saline, a salt water solution. this raises the vein to make it easier to get the needle in and also helps keep the blood from coagulating around the needle.
