The most fun game are rarely the most expensive.

Find a tree make a little rope swing for him in the woods.

Leisure centre, normally quite cheap for a swim etc..

Hide and seek

Go camping indoors, its lateral thinking that is the key!!

when my son was 5.. we did the playdough thing (a lil messy) i remember my son loving playdough.. kids love art, i saved yogurt containers, construction paper, popsicle sticks, rice/beans glue.. etc.. kids are very creative.. see if your neighbor has a pet your son could help feed, etc. you can take him to a pet store, or even the pet shelter and see the cats/dogs that are ready for adoption..
what state are you in? has he started kindergarten yet? local ymca have programs for kids, boys and girls clubs/ recreation centers (at local parks).
also go to www.craigslist.com and look under the for sale section there is a FREE section..look there for hand me downs for your son (and your newborn) people are always handing good stuff down. also look in the CHILDREN section / TICKET section. youd be amazed what people give away.
you can also post an ad for a support group for single moms, post questions there too (childrens sections).
good luck :)

tell him a story, give him some paper and get him to draw things, cook with him, let him help you around the house, find what you can and let him build stuff with it, my nephew used to love making little houses for his toys, you could set him up with a game on the computer, or if you have cornflour, mix it with a tiny bit of water, just enough so its its hard to stir, but looks liquid, then let him play with it. They think its great fun, they hit it and it cracks then melts, I gave it the name sliquid, cause it sounds weird to them.
