I respect EVERYONE, ALWAYS, no matter how they behave. RESPECT is one of the irreplaceble universal values which should NEVER be forgone.

I neither respect nor disrespect someone until they earn it. When I am dealing with someone I don't know, I work on the assumption that I will respect them - but I don't actually do so without cause.

Respecting somebody's views is a different matter. Assuming their views are (what I would class as) respectable, then I respect their right to their opinion, whether I agree or not. If they have views that I find contemptible then they will not be respected. For example, I met someone a few years ago who was an open racist. He firmly believed that Caucasians are superior in every way and that discrimination against others was a positive thing. I respected his honesty, while finding his views (and him) completed unworthy of any respect.

I believe that you must earn respect. However, that doesn't mean that you go around treating people poorly. If you treat others the way you want to be treated both groups will earn respect for each other. Once lost, it can never be fully earned back.

I absolutely treat all people with respect from the start and if someone does something really, really bad to lose my respect, that does not mean I treat them with disrespect but rather I dissociate myself with that person.
I personally dislike those types of people who think people have to earn their respect. Trust is earned. Respect should be given to all. Who do they think they are?

Both.

In general terms, I afford everyone a certain level of respect - that's shown by treating them politely, as being worthy of courtesy.

In specific terms, a deeper level of respect is earned - the respect that comes from knowing that a person has integrity.

I respect them before they loose their respect in me. I believe in people's goodness, a little at least, and I believe that everyone can get a first chance without earning it.

I allow for a minimum of respect to all human beings, even if they're criminal. It's up to them how much they get beyond that.

(The minimum includes basic human rights, an allowance for background and environment, and the benefit of the doubt if I think they're being honest with me.)

I give greater respect for achievements in life, not necessarily monetary or career success, but education, building a successful family, overcoming obstacles, building a strong moral character, self-discipline, etc.

"Innocent until proven guilty"....same with respect. I respect all persons until they lose it. Then again, one of my students recently lost that respect....but regained it very quickly by making a real humble apology.
