Education in Ukraine is interesting. The educational system as a whole is exceptionally good, but you have two situations, which usually form along gender lines (although I know very bright boys, and pretty uneducated girls from Ukraine):

1. The student wants to learn - these students recieve a very good education in Ukraine. I have seen 1st graders that speak 3 languages fluently. They teach at a good grade level or more higher than the US education environment. University students in this category almost unequivocably are exceptionally well educated. Typically, you will find a majority of these students are girls.

2. The student does not want to learn. These students simply do not even try. Typically, this is boys (I said typically, not always). To avoid family embarrasement, the mother or sister of these students will often do their homework, so the student can get good grades. In this group of students, there are 3 types that can enter University...

a) Students from wealthy familys.. children of lawyers, politicians, businessmen... the Universities will often let them in without passing the entrance exams. Because the Universities need donations, they often "overlook" the poor grades.

b) Students who pay tuition... again, the Uni's need money, so they will not fail paying students from the University.

c) Students to "complain" about their professor to a dean or department head about recieving a bad grade.. these students often "show their gratitude" to the dean or department head, and the department head will direct an instructor to give good grades to failing students.

Much of what you find there depends on if you want to learn, or if you can afford to buy your education. Sad, but true
