They die within a few seconds (less than 10).

I don't know if putting them in the freezer eliminates any pain but it does make them very inactive and easier to handle. It's a great tip ... just don't keep them there for more than 20-30 minutes. else they will freeze solid and you'll have difficulty cooking them.

If you think about it -- boiling lobsters ... or steaming them (a better method) isn't any worse than hacking the heads off of live chickens with an axe or driving nails into the skulls of cows / pigs / sheep / etc... or letting fish die by depriving them of oxygen by taking them out of the sea.

That is except for the fact that you yourself have the honor of dispatching the lobster, and the others are done far away from you.

if I'll be a lobster in my next life, I'll let you know..

aside kidding, it sounds barbaric, but it seems that crustacean have a much more primitive nervous system. There is no telling how pain is registered then, but slow suffocation is not better... I am sure it isn't a walk in the park, but I feel worse about the cows pieced for meat in the butchering before even final death, or the chicks living in coops for fattening.

Did you know that oysters are even eaten alive? It is said that they must quiver when you squeeze the lemon... that is where I put a limit. I like my food already DEAD.

The best way to cook a lobster is to boil it alive. If you are concerned about creulty then put the lobster in the freezer for a couple of hours before hand. This sends them into a comatose state so that they are unconcious when you cook them.

EDIT - Eeeek, minutes, not hours! Thank you David E for pointing that out.

People think it is but it isn't
Lobsters have a brain the size of one pea.
Lobsters are typically stunned by refrigeration-the hot water kills them instantly

It is extremely cruel. I mean, would YOU like to be boiled alive? I know I wouldn't.

it's cruel to boil them avlie coz they feel the pain. better wait for someone else ot kill them or they die a natural death due to being out of the water
