So, dim question I know, but the stuff that is in a bottle of Martini (the brand name), is it vermouth or is it actually Martini?

In other words, if I took a swig out of a Martini bottle would I be drinking martini, or does it only become a martini once you add it to gin or vodka?

A Martini contains Gin and Vermouth. Now it is common to find Vodka martini, which contains Vodka and Vermouth. If it is a "pre-mixed" martini it would contain the above.

Not a dim question at all.
Yes, Martini (capital M) is a brand of the drink called vermouth and is made in Italy by the company called Martini & Rossi. Hence the drink "Gin and It" for gin and italian vermouth. Many other italian vermouths are available and most supermarkets have their own brand nowadays.
The french make vermouth also. My favourite one is Noilly Prat (say Nwa-yee Prat) It is absolutely deeelissshhhhusss.

Here's a nice drink - have three/four ice cubes in a large glass.Pour on a slug of gin/about the same amount of Noilly Prat/a shake of lemon juice/ a splash of tonic water/a slice of lemon or, better still, from a fresh lime.

Cheers.

Back in 1912 an Italian immigrant from Arma di Taggia got a job working as a barman at the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City. One night He Filled a shaker with ice over which He then poured 1oz of Gin, a 1/2 oz of French Dry Vermouth and 2 dashes of Orange Bitters. This He gently stirred before pouring the fluid into a cocktail glass and garnished with a single olive. Mr. Martini had created something special that night. Today there are over one hundred variants on His original recipe, including strange concoctions flavored with chocolate.
'Martini' (originally Martini and Rossi ) Is a manufacturer of Vermouth, an aperitif wine, and Asti Spumante wines.

You are correct. martini (small m) is a cocktail of vermouth and gin; now often vodka. Martini is a brand name of vermouth only

the a lot less vermouth in the martini the dryer it really is. So a skinny coating on the glass might want to be classed for my area as a larger dry martini. a million/4oz might want to be dry and any more desirable can be a damp martini IMO.
