It is most likely that they are in a coma as when brought have been on Ice and out of water for at least a day. So technically they are in a near dead state but opening the shells will finally kill them off.

You are supposed to eat them whole - let them slip down. When they hit the acid in your deep stomach pit - they die... probably screaming. Enough to make you a veggie?
