You blow a head which means you blow an engine and depending on the car it may cost more than the car is worth to replace it.
Someone said 4k... good estimate. Someone else said "white smoke" yup, that will happen too. In addition when you blow an engine you risk damaging other parts of the car. An engine that overheats can overheat the transmission too, that means blown tranny. Blown water pump, radiatior, coils, pumps, it can really add up like a chain reaction.
A head gasket is cheap, if you know a good mechanic he might be willing to do it for you as side work (not through a shop) and you might get it done for a great price plus some beer. If you don't know a mechanic try asking on your local craigslist and see if any can help. Make sure the person you work with is reputable and knows his stuff.
On the other hand, if you want a warranty on the work go to a liscenced repair shop. It will cost more but at least if something goes wrong you are covered. My hubby is a mechanic and does lots of side work since he is now the General Manager and rarely gets to work on cars anymore. He warranties his work but thats because he's a good person, not everyone is that way. Choose your mechanic wisely.
