Please excuse my ignorance...

When I was a kid I had a Muslim friend and I used to love going to her house and having her mom paint those designs on my hands with that stuff that smells amazing. I believe it was at Eid, but I could be wrong.

What is that stuff called and what is the tradition??

I believe you are referring to Henna (also called Mehndi), the thing ladies adorn their hands with... it is just meant to add color to the festival and a traditional thing ladies put on their hands whenever there is a festival in the air... from weddings to the culmination of Ramadan.
God bless.

How cute !!

Its called Hinna or Mehndi in Urdu/Hindi !! its just to add some fun on Eid ul Fitr.and only the muslim women put it on hands.....Not the males. Also the bride's hands are decorated with it in Pakistan , India, Bangladesh Srilanka etc ! Mostly in south asian countires!

It is Hinna in Arabic. Some use it on their sckull to die the hair or cool down the head in the hot summer.
I am a Muslim, but hate how it smells, I never touch it. I am amazed that you think it smells amazing.

It is called "henna" in India. Some even refer to it as "mehndi".

Especially womenfolk revel in it.

Menfolk apply it on their beard. Even the holy prophet himself applied it on his beard.

I'd go with Awan's answer

Would like to point out its more cultural though. Hindu's will apply it in india during their festivals.
