There are many kinds of beers. Lagers and dark ales are like comparing apples and oranges... they're both good but vastly different, so it's hard to pick one that's better. I like them both quite a bit though.
My favorite lager is probably Grolsch, from Holland. I also like Kronenbourg from France and Carlsberg from Denmark, and of course Heineken.
My favorite amber ale is Paper City Brewing Company's Holyoke Dam Ale. It's a local microbrew from western Massachusetts (it's really a microbrew... you can only find it in a few parts of western Massachusetts. I went to school there and really miss this beer... I live 2 hours away in Boston and can't find it here. But that's a good thing! It means it's not mass produced. Also means I'm not drinking it so much).

So many Countries, so many brands of Beer so little time to go out and taste test them all for You.
When in doubt go with the classics:
U.S.of A.: John Adams.
Austraila: Tooheys 'New' (N.B. Fosters is for the tourists).
England: Worthington Bass (or a glass of cold water)
Ireland: Kilkenney. (Note to the uninitiated Guinness is not a
beer, it's a stout).

The best brand of beer for me is Heiniken.
I think for the Asian Americans... we all like either Heiniken Or Corona.

Right now it's Guinness season. When the NHL playoffs come around it will be Molson Canadian. When that's over Sam Adams Summer Ale. Then I like Beck's Oktoberfest before the onset of the next Guinness season.

I think my all time favorites are Sapporo, from Japan, Stella Artois, from Belgium, Heineken, from the Netherlands, and Coors, from the USA. But there aren't that many bad beers in my view.
