It depends on your stomach..... and it's different from person to person.
If you have a high metabolism... no problem, your body will digest it anyway or sometimes before you fall in sleep. But if you don't have a high metabolism, you will not fall in sleep (at least not quick) and the food will not get digested very well.....
The problem people are referring to is that your body gets in a resting mode when you sleep, wherefore the food will not be digested (in case of slow metabolism).
Possible reaction:
- You get energetic in stead of sleepy before going to bed
- You sleep shorter at night or wake-up during the night
- Full feeling in the morning
- Restless sleep
- Headache in the morning
- No appetite in the morning
- In the long run getting fat, if you don't sport

Eating after sleeping is definitely bad, sleeping immediately after eating is not very flattering for the one who cooked the food. So, remain awake for a couple of hours after eating. By doing this you can also make sure that the food was not poisoned in the first place.
Immediately after eating the food your brain is actively involved in sending the appropriate signals to the relevant body parts to begin the process of digestion, which it cannot do properly if you go to sleep immediately. Also, the brain RAM may be used up for sweet dreams / nightmares thus impeding in the digestion work.

Sleeping after eating is not, in and of itself, a bad thing to do. Your body will continue to digest as you sleep. The problem shows up when you are eating most of your daily calories just as you are about to become inactive. This is a weight control question, I assume. So, if you are trying to lose weight and build muscle, then you have to eat fewer calories than you are expending in exercise. So, if you normally eat during the day, and get exercise during the day, then the occassional bite of something before bed is not a terrible thing.

It is interesting reading the other answers....
I always believed it was bad to go to bed after eating... but I recently went to my doctor to ask about my insomnia and she told me to have a high in carb SNACK just before bed as that will assist me in going to sleep.
I guess a small snack is better than a three course meal before bed. ALSO have you ever gone to bed on a totally empty stomach and woken up REALLY hungry in the middle of the night and not been able to go back to sleep because you are hungry?
Another thing with eating before going to bed .. some foods can over-stimulate your brain and you will have some really really weird dreams and even nightmares... Mind you the really weird dreams can be entertaining

You should stop eating a minimum of 2 hours before you go to bed. Especially if you are trying to loose weight. This gives your body time to digest and process what you have eaten. If you eat right be fore you go to bed, your metabolism slows while you sleep, as do all bodily processes, and can lead to weight gain, heartburn ,gerd... Also, if possible dont drink any sugary drinks prior to sleeping. Not only can this lead to sleepless nights, but it is bad for the enamel on your teeth.

Im not sure, they say you can have awful nightmares after eating certain things, but ive never noticed a difference in my dreams by what I ate. I work 2nd shift and dont get home until midnight, but always eat when i get home, as I am hungry! Ive never gained weight doing this , Ive been on this shift 20years and still weigh 106., dont think it really matters as long as your not consuming too many calories all day. The majority of mine are 5pm and after.

It is bad for all your digestive track
it will make your reflux etc bad & a Dr says never lie down until at least 2 hours after eating or it will make your hiatas hernia play up & make you feel sick
& not sure if you will get fat, that may not be right but its still unhealthy
