Disguise them. White ceiling? Paint the same color. Visually seem to disappear.

Over here they sell fake wood colored polystyrene U shapes to fit over unsightly beams across ceilings. Great for hiding cables too as long as they're not going to heat up.

Mirrors, stick on brick, wooden wainscoating turn it to your advantage.

Why do you want to hide them? Are they ugly? Can you turn them into decorative items? Can you change their shape by adding stuff to them? Turn a boring square column into a funky spiral column. Pain it a jarring color and use it as a counterpoint. Turn it into a useful table by putting two halves of a table around it

I saw one house where they fitted an arch along the top of a space between a pillar and a wall and installed a cabinet underneath accessible from one side and sofas on the other. Made up a nice nook. Or perhaps you might want to divide a room with a bookcase hung off the column.

I saw one column in another house that had a hollow built into it big enough to sit a candle in. Impractical but pretty. Make sure that doesn't affect its structural integrity!

Sheet rock the ceiling, texture and paint. I just don't understand why you would want to hide them, they could be stained or painted.
