The body largest organ is the skin.
Skin is a self-repairing organ that covers and protects our body. Yet most people overlook the importance of good skin care.
Skin covering 18 square feet and weighing about seven pounds in an average adult. The skin acts as a waterproof barrier that affords protection from invasion by dirt, bacteria, and other harmful substances and helps to regulate body temperature.
The skin is composed of three layers -- the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous layer.
They may be health conscious about what they put in their bodies but ignore the facts about what they put on their bodies. Both are critically important. The skin is one of the main indicators of health. Physicians always check the color, tone and other characteristics of the skin in their clinical evaluations. Our skin can reflect what's going on inside our bodies.
The skin manufactures Vitamin D, helps regulate body temperature, and is embedded with nerve endings that provide the sensations of touch, pressure, and pain. The surface layer, the epidermis, acts as a protective layer. The thicker layer beneath the epidermis is the dermis and contains most of the skin's living structures, such as hair follicles, nerve endings, sebaceous and sweat glands, and blood vessels.
