For instance, if one is diagnosed with major depressive symptoms, is there the possibility that he or she will be less able to resist the temptation from peers already using drugs? Or will the depressed person be likely to want to self-medicate and therefore use drugs?

Yes,
I have been diagnosed with depression. And I new it before going to the Dr. Once I new what I had, I could look at others and see them dealing with my same problems. Really, most all the people I began to talk to whom I thought acted as if they felt just like me, really did.
The only difference, they self medicated. This is were most addiction starts. I see how anything that makes you feel better one time can be addictive.

I was diagnosed w/ a Major Depressive Disorder. I was not not tempted to use illegal drugs. I am also very careful with the medication for depression; I take it as prescribed.

I see you have some answers that say yes to your question. These people could be correct. I am just speaking from my personal experience.

your concered with only drugs.
put it a little different, or try.

what's the first thing a person, who feels like even on the best of days can not even want to understand why the sun came to dawn, but on the abolute worse he is feeling then, knowing how the best he felt was and not expecting anything different but wanting to find a way(any way sometimes) tries to escape his own loss of will, what will this person do to get away?
if it drugs, or sleep, or one last ditch attaempt that for him makes the answer make the one way out of his percieved hell, that's what or where he'll turn to escape.
people need medical intervention only because of how we differ.
if this was asked for you, now you know the answer.
if for a friend, neighbor , or only because of wanting to know, find out what that person knows to work when trapped like that. then if this was for just knowing, maybe the next time you'll need to understand how to get help for another, even before the ask this themselves.

please, don't be like me, i'm human, but when i should have looked at my friend.....
i forgot..now it seems i found out but still cann't answer why, i honestly loved him, shouldn't i have known sooner? ( where did it even make sense that his choice was a gun? he hated the idea of being able to take another's live with only a finger, maybe that's what i missed, he understood better than i when a pointed finger meant the end. i guess maybe that's why this kid blew his brains out and wasn't found for 2 days later, at least i can guess, i can not bring back my friend to ask.)
that's why if you have a question like this apply it, when you can see a doctor, this is not all a person has to endure to prove what he only understands.
ask, that doesn't need any reasoning except " hey, i wanna know, what......"

Yes...if only the person who is depressed knows that there are things that will suposively help to bring their moods up. some abuse the anti depressants that are given to them as they don't think they work as they should. the best way to judge it is to ask people that know you well if you are better than say a week prior etc...when starting the meds and if you find it doesn't work go back to your doctor.

Yes. Seek out therapy and a supervised regime of prescription medications. If you do not have access to a private doctor, contact one of the social service agencies in your community.
