PVC is a hard, brittle plastic. When it was first used it was mixed with a plasticiser to make it softer for things like furniture, but the mixture was still referred to as PVC. Once uses were found for unplasticised PVC it went on the market as uPVC.

The main difference between PVC and uPVC is that uPVC doesn’t contain phthalates or BPA. This makes it safer for transporting water, as well as making it fire-resistant.The term PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, and the term uPVC stands for unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. PVC pipe is often used to distribute water that people aren’t going to drink. It’s also used to insulate electric cables. The uPVC versions often replace wood when building window frames and sills. The uPVC pipe variant also often replaces pipes made of cast iron for drains, waste piping, downspouts and gutters.
Many people use PVC instead of metal, as PVC is much easier to cut than metal, and it’s also easy to use glue together. In addition, PVC is still fairly tough, so not much strength is lost. Most plastic piping around the globe is actually uPVC because of how resistant it is to degradation caused by chemicals, high and low temperatures and various pressure points. The uPVC version of piping is less flexible than regular PVC, but it's also more recyclable.
Neither uPVC nor PVC pipes are used for drinking water. The cPVC variant is used for this purpose instead because it is much safer.

Polyvinyl chloride, (IUPAC Polychloroethene) commonly abbreviated PVC, is a widely used thermoplastic polymer. In terms of revenue generated, it is one of the most valuable products of the chemical industry. Globally, over 50% of PVC manufactured is used in construction. As a building material, PVC is cheap and easy to assemble. In recent years, PVC has been replacing traditional building materials such as wood, concrete and clay in many areas. Despite appearing to be an ideal building material, concerns were raised about the costs of PVC to the natural environment and human health.
There are many uses for PVC. As a hard plastic, it is used as vinyl siding, magnetic stripe cards, window profiles, gramophone records (which is the source of the name for vinyl records), pipe, plumbing and conduit fixtures. The material is often used in Plastic Pressure Pipe Systems for pipelines in the water and sewer industries because of its inexpensive nature and flexibility. PVC pipe plumbing is typically white, as opposed to ABS, which is black.
It can be made softer and more flexible by the addition of plasticizers, the most widely used being phthalates. In this form, it is used in clothing and upholstery, and to make flexible hoses and tubing, flooring, to roofing membranes, and electrical cable insulation.
Plasticizers are additives that soften the materials (usually a plastic or a concrete mix) they are added to. Although the same compounds are often used for both plastics and concretes, the desired effect is slightly different. The plasticizers for plastics soften the final product increasing its flexibility. Plasticizers for concrete soften the mix before it hardens, increasing its workability, and are usually not intended to affect the properties of the final product after it hardens.
Plasticizers for plastics are additives, most commonly phthalates, that give hard plastics like PVC the desired flexibility and durability. They are often based on esters of polycarboxylic acids with linear or branched aliphatic alcohols of moderate chain length. Plasticizers work by embedding themselves between the chains of polymers, spacing them apart (increasing of the "free volume"), and thus significantly lowering the glass transition temperature for the plastic and making it softer. For plastics such as PVC, the more plasticiser added, the lower its cold flex temperature will be. This means that it will be more flexible, though its strength and hardness will decrease as a result of it. Some plasticizers evaporate and tend to concentrate in an enclosed space; the "new car smell" is caused mostly by plasticizers evaporating from the car interior.
Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC)
uPVC is often used in the building industry as a low maintenance material, particularly in the UK, and in the USA where it is known as vinyl. The material comes in a range of colours and finishes, including a photo-effect wood finish, and is used as a substitute for painted wood, most obviously for window frames and sills when installing double glazing in new buildings or to replace older single glazed windows. It has many other uses including fascia, and siding or weatherboarding. The same material has almost entirely replaced the use of cast iron for plumbing and drainage, being used for waste pipes, drainpipes, gutters and downpipes.
