I will say better to buy in Bangkok. Phuket is not known to be a good place to be buying jewelry. Plenty of counterfeits around and you need to be knowledgeable in knowing the real stuff. All that glitters is not gold.

usually the biggest and the best place to buy gold in thailand is the bangkok's china town.
if you want to buy a gold bar for investment, thai gold purity is only 96.5% which is lower than the international market standard (99.5%). think well before you invest your money. if you want to buy and sale in thailand, it is ok to do so, but saling thai gold internationally is not recommended.
if you just want to buy it as a jewelry, it will be easier, just go to the biggest gold shop to make sure that the thing you r buying is the real gold.

Only bought Jewlery once. Lost my wedding ring and needed a replacement. Otherwise I would stay clear of Jewlery shops in Thailand.
