Considering a short term move to Hawaii, need some advice!?

Question

I am going to be graduating college in May, and am planning on moving temporarily to Honolulu (3-12 months). I plan on renting a room month to month, I noticed that there were many being advertised from 450-750 a month. I have a few questions; should I consider anywhere else other than Honolulu? I chose this area because it has a lot of nightlife and happenings, and I would likely be able to find a job -- not looking to start a career, but just enough to pay rent and have a little spending money. I figure the bus and maybe a bicycle is all I will really need for transportation, wouldn't you say? Any additional advice on neighborhoods to avoid or to look more closely at? If I end up finding a great room on the other end of the island, can I still commute fairly easily to Honolulu by bus if I provide enough time?

I'm from Hawaii, about 12 miles from Downtown Honolulu so I suppose I can offer some tips...
- We have an excellent bus system, so you'd probably be fine as far as transportation.
- Most rooms for rent are near the U of Hawaii (decent neighborhood, not the best). These will be listed with locations such as "University, Makiki, Manoa, Kapiolani, McCully, and others."
- I would avoid the following neighborhoods for various reasons. Too far away (Wahiawa, Mililani, North Shore, Waianae, Nanakuli). Not safe (Kalihi, Palama, Waipahu).
- If you want to live out of Honolulu then the bus will easily get you to and from in reasonable time (traffic here can be pretty bad though). Good communities outside of Honolulu are Aiea and Pearl City (to the west (cheaper rent, but plenty traffic and not as nice)), and Kailua and Kaneohe (to the east (higher rent but less traffic)).

great apple and Hawaii are worlds aside in terms of subculture and atmosphere, yet they have extremely some similarities, too. Honolulu and NYC are very different, albeit with different demographics. the two cities are high priced, yet NYC nevertheless has Hawaii beat in terms of cost of residing comparisons. looking paintings in Honolulu would desire to actual be extra problematic than in NYC simply by diminish form of jobs. you can get an idea as far as rent and stuff..just like whoseintoday said avoid those neighborhoods. Whatever you do stay out of "plumeria apartments" lots of druggys there. I grew up in Kailua and loved it.
