by the way, this tablet was HUGE,not like the normal small tablets you get at the pet shops and the dog is a greyhound so he's quite big.Would worming your dog every two weeks not give it an upset tummy?

Best thing to do is to ring the vet & ask. Drontal is very effective, far better than over the counter treatments which simply don't work. You certainly don't need to do him every 2 weeks, probably every 3 months, at least every 6 months.

Drontal Dog Wormer

Drontal only kills all of the adult parasites in the dog's system at the time that the dose is given. You can worm him again in 2 weeks, but I do not recommend doing it every 2 weeks. I have all of my dogs on Interceptor, which is a heartworm preventative, that I give them once a month that also de-worms the them. It is easier and cheaper to de-worm them that way than any other (especially when you are dealing with a large dog).

I personally think that de-worming them more than once every month does upset their stomach, and that over time it looses its effectiveness. Giving Drontal (or any de-wormer) does not prevent worms, it only kills what the dog has in its system.

Usually Drontal is a one-shot deal, one dose will clear out any existing tapeworms. So it's a matter of your dog's risk of getting reinfested with them. If he eats dead things or hunts, or has bad fleas, then once every 6 months would be excellent. Occasional fleas or dead things, then maybe once a year. Otherwise, whenever you see them come back. Really bad cases, a 2nd dose in 2 weeks to make sure he is clear is appropriate, especially for the combination dewormers.

Puppy dewormer (pyrantel, Nemex) is very gentle and OK to give once every 2 weeks, and that dose is based on the life cycle of the worms, not on the dog's ability to handle it. Tapeworm medicine (praziquantel) is entirely different-it does not kill the worms directly, but breaks down the tapeworms' protective shell, allowing the body to digest the tapeworm (icky I know). Tapeworms don't have multiple life stages that migrate through the body like other worms do, so you can kill them in one shot. Roundworms and hookworms spend part of their life outside the intestines, so you'll never kill them in one dose-you only kill the adults living in the intestines at that particular time. You won't see tapeworms pass because they get digested, roundworms and hookworms will pass in the stool, which is extremely gross but not a reason to panic, because if they are passing it means they are dead. A combination dewormer will have both medications in it, from the size of the pill I would guess you were given a combo pill.

Interceptor is great for general deworming, but you need something extra for tapes.

Drontal tablets don't last as such. What it does is that it kills what there is at the time of administration. Your dog can get reinfected by ingesting worm eggs or carrying host (rodents) almost the next day. but it will take some time for eggs to develop in adult worms. That 's why you need to worm your dog every 2-3 months.

you give the dog the tablet and then give another one 2 weeks later, that should do it for 6 months, hope this is of some use.

Generally one treatment is sufficient. Retreat if dog gets reinfected. Steps should be taken to control fleas and small mammals on the premises in order to prevent reinfection; otherwise, retreatment will be necessary. This is especially true in case of tapeworms transmitted by fleas (Dipylidium caninum) where reinfection is almost certain to occur if fleas are not removed from your pet and his environment. If reinfection occurs, tapeworm segments may be observed within one month of the initial treatment.

I'm not a vet, or assistant, but I've been a breeder for 13 years. We don't use Dontrol, we use Pyran 50, but I believe it's similar. We use it every 2 weeks. All wormers should be repeated in 10-14 days. But you can get wormer at a pet supply store, for a lot less than the vet's office.
