it is just a program that compresses and decompresses files.

the compressedfiles that you download could be harmfull though so always virus scan them first

it shouldn't. you can download the winzip.exe file to your computer and run a virus check on that file (do you have Norton Anti-Virus? or something like that?). once you have determined that it's safe, you should be able to simply open it and let it do it's thing. winzip is a very trusted product. I have it. My dad the computer geek has it. It should be fine
