Dress according to what you are going to be doing there.
If you're interviewing for jobs or going to business meetings, by all means, bring business suits.
If you're just going to visit and hang out, wear what you normally wear. If you try and change what you wear regularly in order to "fit in" you'll stick out like a sore thumb and people WILL notice. Fakes aren't appreciated there. Berkeley is a mix of many, many types of people, not just hippies.
Word of warning: The San Francisco Bay Area, of which Berkeley is a part, is COLD at night and often in the day as well. Bring a WARM coat, not a wussy jacket. And at this time of year, skip the sandals.

Yep. Although you might want to "fit in" in Berkeley , the days of the flower-power and hippie movement are about over--by 30 years. Be comfortable. Berkeley dresses casual. But modern casual, not bell-bottoms and paisley shirt casual of the late 60's.
And yes, I agree with the guy above me. Put away the sandals. It can get damn cold this time of year. Athletic shoes are fine. It rained this week.
If you are doing business, dress business; if you are casual, dress casual. If in doubt,....then layer your clothes, to put on or take off sweater or jacket if the weather turns cold or foggy, or off if warm and sunny.
Designer labels?!!! please. Give me a break.

You can pretty much wear whatever you feel comfortable in in Berkeley. Remember you will be close to the Bay and may need to be prepared to have a light jacket of some type handy, even in the summer.

That's the beauty of Berkeley; you can wear whatever you want and nobody cares(with the exception of your friends if they are like that). I was born in the East Bay, lived in Berkeley for 5 years, Oakland for 3 and I ASSURE you that no one will take notice or comment on your clothes. Berkeley is all about freedom, of speech, of dress, of thinking, whatever it may be. Have a blast and enjoy one of the last places in California where you can be yourself without fear of judgement.

Welcome to California, the land of freedom, tolerance and innovation. And guess what? Our governor can beat any other governor in arm wrestling too.
