why is it that there are more male dentists than female dentists? it couldnt be because its a difficult field, because there are plenty of female medical doctors, which is just as difficult to get into. so what gives?

This will change in our lifetime. The current national graduating class is about 50% female. (Actual figures are available at http://www.ada.org if you really want to know...)
Dentistry is a traditionally male profession in the USA. When I graduated in 1976, there were 6 women in a class of about 150. There were about the same number in all of the classes above and below me in school at that time. It's just the way it was. I don't know if the Good Old Boy network kept women out of dental school or if women just didn't perceive the profession as one they would wish to join.
Certainly, there were very few role models to inspire women to enter the profession.
As I said, though, that is changing and it is changing rapidly. Of course, there are more younger women in dentistry, but within another generation, I imagine the field will be shared about 50/50 between the genders.
In fact, this year my old school (Penn) published this information on the web: From 1,843 applicants, 116 students were accepted into the Class of 2009. For the third year in a row, the freshman class includes more women (64) than men (52).

I would guess the same reason why there are more female teachers for grade school than there are males. Its Just because... The field i guess started with the image of a general sex controlling the field... like the Military field... men and the Nurse field conveyed the image of a women. With changing times come changes in the images that we have on not only Titles but also roles in society. There will be an ever growing amount of women joining the field over the next decade but as for now you'll see that its still no 50:50 ratio but of societies image placement and conformation to that thinking.

i do no longer think of the medical doctors gender has something to do with it. some are greater valuable at injecting than others. If the technique, even after being numbed, nonetheless hurts, you may desire to ask for greater novocaine. i like to drink coffee. properly, caffeine will cut back the effectiveness of the anesthetic, so do no longer drink any caffeinated drinks for some hours in the previous treatment. i've got additionally had a male dentist who had to redo the rootcanal thrice, on 2 diverse teeth. He did no longer fee me anymore whether it grew to become right into a topic to flow via.

I'll be a patient, Kristina, if you'll get that degree & work in my city! :-D
I've aways gone to male DDS - I'd like to try a female DDS, since I've never been to one - might be a better experience looking at someone a bit more "pleasant to the eye" while being subjected to the work.
(Hey - not being sexist here, I promise! Just may make the experience better for some, that's all)

You go girl!!!! Become what ever you wana!!!
More males, cos dentistry was perceived to be a male profession due to the mechanical strenght needed to pull teeth (teeth used to be pulled by barbers originally.. and they used to dry the blood soaked cloths on a white pole outside hence barbers usually have a red and white striped pole outside there shops till today as a trademark This was a male profession)
But these days anyone can do it, it aint hard, put your mide to it and you can do it..!
