First, the cat will recognise your voice. He has a special meow to tell you he's hungry or he needs to use the toilet etc.. Indeed most long time cat owners seem to be able to tell the difference between every single meow and know what they mean. Similarly, he will very soon learn to understand certain words. (But very few).. He'll realise you use a special word to call him and he will come to you because he associates that word with god stuff like a toy, a scratch or food. Finally, a cat is sensitive to the tone and volume of your voice. If you shout his name, he'll scamper off because he knows he must have done something wrong. When you coo his name, he knows he can expect a cuddle.. There's a lot of non-verbal action going on that cats are very sensitive to, that goes beyond the actual use of words..

Just like a dog or a human baby, if you keep repeating the same sound whenever the being is there, it begin to associate the sound (it's name) with itself. Cats don't really understand our language, some become familiar with certain words you speak to them with specific actions attached ("I love you" "sit" etc.) but it's because of the tone of your voice, repeated actions when you use the word, rewards for doing a certain action when it hears the word. Just like you learn.

Usually our furry feline friend will recognize the sound of your voice and your smell. secondly the cat will recognize syllables. Also as a dog naming tip 1 or two syllable names are best. as a third point the cat will recognize a similar sound. and it associates it with coming.

My friend has a cat that we refer to as one of the dogs. It knows it's not allowed to leave the backyard, it comes when it's called, it sits for its dinner - it does everything a dog does but is dressed in a cat suit. Cats are no different to dogs with understanding, it's just that people tend to spend more time with dogs training them than what they do with cats...

I am pretty sure my cat understands everything I say that has to do with him. Even when he sleeps, when I start talking about him, without changing the tone of my voice, he turns his ear towards me or lifts his head and looks at me! He also understands words like food, and runs to the kitchen, and my friend's kitten also understands the word laser, and goes to a door jamb where my friend points the laser pointer for him to chase!

it understands that when you say his name multiple times and you get his attention they either look at you or come when called... most come to you when THEY want to =) Did you know that you can get your cat to sit, lay and beg just like a dog? I did!! Use treats or whatever your cat likes to eat... treat him as if he was a dog and get him used to his name by calling him, when he looks at you then give him the treat... cats arent as dumb as most people think they are!! =)

Yes. I belief that they understand many of our words. Like the name and "food" and "out" . Of course they will immediate pick up your intention if you want them to come and you want to give them something nice or if you want to take them to the vet. You won't find your cat then :-)
They are clever animals!

I read that cats respond better to two-syllable names ending in a "Y" sound.

So your chances of him coming when called are better if that is the kind of name he has.

Cats can hear and differentiate words. Many animals can learn words, at least they can respond to them if not repeat them.

my dad talks to my dog inukrainian and he understands his name in english and ukrainian
but he understands i guess more "commands" in ukrainian
my dads father and his grand father trained german sheppards as attack dogs for the german army like wayyy ago like WWII
