I want a new pistol for concealed carry to replace my cap and ball revolver. So I plan purchasing a colt M1911 for its reliability and for hard hitting .45 colt ACP round. I wanted to know if this was a good pistol for concealed carry? Is it difficult to keep concealed? Would you recommend any other pistol to carry besides the colt m1911?

The Colt 1911 is one of the finest guns made, and it is quite easy to conceal. To be effective, the gun must be carried loaded with a round in the chamber and with the safety on. A condition called lcocked and locked.Until recently these guns have no firing pin safetie, and if dropped, it can discharge. If you are a novice, I would recommend something like the Glock pistols in .45 ACP caliber. They are super safe, and double action only. There is no way to discharge a Glock unless the trigger is pulled all the way rearwards.

Man, that is a lot of pistol to hide. When I am not carrying concealed at work, I use the full size XD 45 Springfield Armory, good old reliable and 14 rounds of .45, that is almost double of your old 1911. The other thing with the 1911 is that whole ****** and locked thing makes me a bit nervous which was why I traded off my Para-Ordinance P-12 .45 auto.
I would seriously recommend the XD compact models. I also carry a Smith & Wesson Airweight Chief in .38 with 2 speed strips of 38 +P ammo. It is so light and so concealable you can carry it in shorts in the summer and nobody is the wiser.
If you can carry legally, any of those choices are decent.

I like the 1911 for holster carry. Carrying the gun "****** and locked" is awkward with concealed carry, the darn hammer keeps jabbing you.
My concealed carry gun is a Taurus 745. A compact, 3 inch barrel, .45acp, with a polymer frame. I can carry it in an IWB holster (Inside the Waist Band). It is a double action/single action semi auto. Carries 7 rounds. Also available as the 145; same gun but with a 10 capacity. Quarter of an inch fatter. Available on various Internet auction sites for around $300 to $350.

You need a compact version. It has a shorter barrel.
The single stack design of the 1911 works well for concealed carry because the gun has a very slim profile.
The only problem with a 1911 is that it is single action, you either have to carry "****** and locked" and deal with the slight inherent risk or cock the hammer as you draw the weapon.

As much as I am loathe to recommend it try a compact or sub-compact DAO in .40 S&W such as a Glock 23 or Glock 27
Kahr also makes fine small frame pistols.

I have a Glock 27 .40 I think that they make it in .45 too. It is perfect for concealed carry. Subcompact frame, but you can put finger extensions on the clips so it is comfortable with even large hands. Glock also uses a tighter rifling on the barrel so this gun is VERY accurate even with just a 3" barrel.

Whoa...Easy there cowboy, first off for concealed carry and 1911 is a large frame handgun and it will be hard to completely conceal it and still maintain any kind of comfort. also if you are not careful you will end up with hole in your leg because it is single action and very unforgiving. I would recommend something a bit smaller and double action, but that is my opinion

I would recommend a Glock, but I hate Glocks.
The 1911 is a large gun, and not easily concealed.
I carry an XD .357 SIG with a 3" barrel.

A 9mm or a .45 and colt m1911 is a good gun, but the 9mm and .45 is better easier to conceal.

Most of my friends carry 9mm Glocks but I prefer the Beretta 92F. Both have larger magazine capacities than the 1911.
