Find an alcoholics anonymnous group in your area, on http://www.alcoholics-anonymous.org/?Media=PlayFlash, start going to meetings and hooking up with others who have the same problem and understand you.
It's scary to walk through those doors the first time but once you do you will feel SO welcome.............. maybe you have a close friend who could go with you for support to an "open" meeting, not for alcoholics only?
You can also get a prescription from the doctor for something called "Antabuse" but that is supposed to be for really super heavy duty users,..........can't hurt to ask.
I wish you the best of luck, AA is an awesome program, just don't choose a sponsor TOO SOON, make sure it's someone you connect with who has what you want in sobriety.

First, you need to admit, to yourself, that you have a problem with it. Then you need to be sure that you are quitting for you--quitting for others does not work--you need to want it for yourself.
If you have a really bad problem, you may need the help of a doctor or 5 days at a detox facility. Then, you may want to consider going to rehab (much longer) to try to put your life back together.
If you are drinking all day, every day, you can't just stop drinking suddenly--if you did, you could get the DTs, and also risk having seizures. That is why most people who go to detox are given librium--to avoid that (they don't get any to bring home when they leave).
Some people do get Valium or Xanax, which will prevent them from the severity of stopping drinking suddenly. It's okay to use them for about five days, but more than that will lead from an alcohol addiction to a Valium or Xanax addiction.
Some people go to AA meetings or to a psychiatrist. I happen to prefer a psychiatrist to any type of "group" thing--as I get very nervous in public. Additionally, a psychiatrist may give some Valium or Xanax, where AA does not believe in medicating in any way. AA will tell you that you will always be an alcoholic, but that you are recovering, one day at a time. AA keeps you going to meetings at least once a day, make you get a sponsor, and then there's all the "steps." Very time consuming--but they say that if you had the time to drink, you have the time to do all the things they ask of you. AA will also tell you not to consume anything that contains the slightest bit of alcohol--including cough syrups and mouth wash.
Now this is probably a very bad thing to tell you, but if I needed to stop drinking, I would do so in the same way that you get off prescription meds for anxiety or depression. That way is weaning yourself off. That means drinking less and less each day until you are comfortable not drinking at all. I would drink the least amount possible that I could physically bear. AA (and probably most doctors) would not approve of this--as having alcohol at all will make you crave it in large quantities again--they say--even if that is not right away.
I wish you luck--alcohol is very bad for some of us with addictive personalities. Hang in there, you can do this if you really want to.
Another thing that is probably really bad to tell you is that a lot of people use pot to ease the pain of quitting.

Its really hard to quit alcohol, its you own determination that could help you.
1) Kill all the evedences that provocate you for having liqor.
2) Isolate your self from your drinker friends
3) Divert you mind to Prayers, bussiness, or any other work that you are interested at.
4) Take regular and timely food.
5) Make up your mind that today you are doing it, will you like your son to called a drinkers child? Would you like to spoil your bussiness, self image, or family life cause of silly things.
Note: if you can give a break of at least 3-4 months and you are tempted to go in for it try to use max water.

Try attending a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous, they are pros. If you need an address or time of a meeting near you, check your local phone book in either the white or yellow pages for the number of the local service center, they will have a schedule for your area. Good Luck. See you at the meeting.

in order to quit alcohol Firm Determination is required. don't leave it at once but slowly & gradually start drinking in lesser quantity.
so the best idea is hv full control on ur nerves. leave or avoid the company of the ppl who drinks frequently. if u get tempted then change ur mood & go for window shopping
or the best thing is close ur eyes & MEDITATE. make urself busy as there r many more things wid which u can enjoy for example, start chatting as this the best way to distract ur mind.
think for wt u hv come on the earth. do gud karmas (AS U SAW SO U'LL REAP) just try 2 do it for a week or 15 days as i said above i m sure u'll successed.
Gud Luck.
bye

Go see a dr there are meds to prevent some of the major complications of stopping. You need to be honest with the dr about how much you drink so the dr can come up with some good ideas for you.
Try a support group to help you stop, like AA
