the AF has currently filled all of it's slots for GED holders.
the Army has the most slots available, with the Marines and navy having very very few open.
but adding one semesters' worth( 15 credits or 5 classes) of 100 level or higher college courses elevates that GED to the same level as a HS diploma.

HA! Lets put this way, with only a GED, you will not be able to at all. Now, a GED, AND 15 College Credits AND score at least 50 AFQT score on the ASVAB, you would be qualified to join the Air Force, but for the GED route the chances of you getting into the any of the armed services are slim to none. GED's are put in the back of the line. Everyone with High School Diplomas will be put in front of you. They will constantly be accepting HS diplomas over GED's, CONSTANTLY! Like lets take a class of 100 recruits going into the military. Only 2 or 3 will have a GED. And more and more recruits are having high school diplomas to the point that the Army as of last summer stopped accepting GED's. What does that tell you? Finish high school dude..

I would go and talk to a recruiter on both issues. I just read that the AF reached it's recruiting goals for the year and that 99% had high school diplomas. I think the same article discussed that they recruited 35,000 so that means 350 of these people must have had GEDs. If your recruiter says that the AF only take HS Grads, ask him what type of degree the other 1% of recruits for the last year had. It would also help if you have taken the ASVAB and have good scores on that test.
As far as the medical portion goes, your records would have to be evaluated, again this is another thing to discuss with the recruiter. I'm sure they would have your records screened by AF doctors to ensure that you would meet world wide deployment qualificatons.
Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please feel free to let me know. For right now, work that recruiter and see about getting your ASVAB test accomplished.

I am an Air Force recruiter. it is very hard to join with a GED. You need to score a 65 on the ASVAB if you want to do it, but even then its still hard to get a GED slot. My advice is enroll in a semester of college. 15 semester hours of college is as good as a HS diploma.

the Air Force is closed to GEDs unless you have 15 semester hours of college, then you are considered a high school graduate.
The Air Force Reserve is accepting GEDs, as is the Army.

Some branches have a max number of GED applicants they can accept per month (or whatever period of time), but you can take the ASVAB to see what you score.
If you score high enough on the ASVAB and go on a month where they're still accepting GED applicants, then yeah, you can sign up.

If you have a GED you have to have a waiver to get in. However, almost all applicants with a GED have college credit (two years is normal). One of our best friends is a recruiter and I just asked him.

To my knowledge, as far as the military is concerned, a GED is equal to a high school diploma.
